I’ve been looking up information on literary agents with a view to trying to get some interest in my second manuscript. The really useful Writer’s Workshop has a list of agents and their specialities that you can download and the surprising thing was the injunction that many seem to have against science fiction.
My manuscript is non-fiction but sci-fi related and so it was a big surprise that so many are loathe to look at anything remotely futuristic. It’s swings and roundabouts of course and there are agents that specialise in the genre, but these are not so common. Perhaps it was just seeing it in print that gave the prohibition such stridency, but none of the agents listed had injunctions against literature involving sado-masochistic torture or cannibal pornography.
